Ready to Schedule Your Mammogram?
Shawnee Mission Health (SMH) offers mammography services at three Johnson County locations: Shawnee Mission Health - Prairie Star, the Breast Center at Shawnee Mission Medical Center, and the new Shawnee Mission Health - Overland Park (now open).

Screening mammography is an X-ray exam that produces images of the internal structures of the breasts. It is the most accurate method of evaluating the entire breast. These images can detect abnormal calcifications, as well as lumps that are too small to be felt by you or your doctor. All exams are performed by female registered technologists who have had specialized training and certification in mammography.

A breast radiologist will read your mammogram within 24 hours and a report of your exam will be faxed to your doctor within minutes after it is dictated. We will mail your results to you within seven business days. Many doctors’ offices also send notification of results.

3D Screening
Available at: Shawnee Mission Medical Center and the new SMH—Overland Park.
In 3D screening, the scanner moves in an arc over the breasts, taking images from various angles. Having a 3D mammogram is very similar to conventional mammography, but with the distinct advantage of improving your doctor’s ability to identify small tumors. Women with dense breast tissue benefit the most from this advanced screening.

2D Mammography
Available at all three locations
Conventional 2D mammography takes images of the breast from two angles. Many women continue to choose the traditional 2D mammography due to insurance coverage limitations.

A physician’s order is not needed for 2D or 3D screening mammograms.

SMH offers $100 Mammography Screening for self-pay patients. Remember to schedule your procedure in advance. The $100 fee will be collected at the time of service. This fee does not include the radiology physician’s reading fee.

Be proactive about your breast health.
