During the past several weeks, news outlets have reported a fungal meningitis outbreak in patients who received lumbar spine steroid injections for back pain. Meningitis cases have been reported in 10 states, none of which are from Kansas or Missouri.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has linked the contaminated drugs to the New England Compounding Center, a pharmacy in Framingham, Mass., who has since recalled all of its products.
The Center for Pain Medicine at Shawnee Mission Medical Center (SMMC) administers lumbar spine steroid injections, however does not use products from this manufacturer. SMMC receives lumbar spine steroid injections from Pfizer and we have no reason to believe there are contamination risks with our supply.
SMMC did receive other medications from the New England Compounding Center, none of which have been linked to any sort of contamination. At our first knowledge of the meningitis outbreak, the SMMC Pharmacy proactively pulled all medications from the New England Compounding Center as a precautionary measure, even before the recall was issued.
At this time, we have no reason to believe that any of our current or former patients have been negatively affected by medications from the New England Compounding Center. Because our patients have come to trust our services, it is our priority to communicate effectively to alleviate any concerns.
