What to Expect

Stay aware during your hospital stay

Hospitals today are very different than they were several years ago. Medical care has become more comprehensive with even more health care professionals involved in your care. This makes communication between caregivers more important than ever.

At Shawnee Mission Health we are proud of the safe care we provide each and every day. You and your loved ones play an important role in helping to reduce risk and supporting safe care.

Help prevent infections
  • Great hand hygiene is the best way to prevent the spread of infection. Be sure to wash your hands with soap and water or alcohol before eating, after using the restroom, or any time your hands become soiled.
  • Remind your health care team to wash their hands with soap and water, or use sanitizer before they examine you. If you haven’t seen them wash their hands, ask them to do so. Don’t be shy. Speak up to protect yourself.
  • Covering your nose and mouth with a tissue or the bend of your elbow when you cough or sneeze can help prevent the spread of disease. Remember to throw away your tissue and wash your hands immediately.
  • Get your vaccinations to avoid disease and reduce the spread of infection. Check with your physician to make sure all of your vaccinations are current.
Learn about your conditions, treatments, tests and procedures
* Learn all you can about your condition and the treatments available. Your health care team is a great resource for this information.
* Read all medical forms you are asked to sign. If you don’t understand something, ask for clarification. Never sign a medical form without thoroughly understanding it.
* Learn about treatment options and never hesitate to ask for a second opinion.
* Always get the results of your tests or procedures and ask your doctor to review them with you.
Ask about your care
  • If you do not understand something about your care or treatment plan, ask questions. No one on your health care team expects you to understand everything about your care. Never be embarrassed to ask questions.
  • Shawnee Mission Medical Center will provide you with a pen and notepad to write down questions for your doctor and the health care team. Take notes about what the doctor tells you and about any explanations you receive. It is often difficult to completely understand everything your being told. Ask a family member or trusted friend to serve as your advocate to help interpret information.
  • Always ask about any medications you are prescribed. Be sure you know what the medication is for, how to take it and for how long; and if there are side effects.
Thank you for the opportunity to provide you with safe, quality care. If you have any questions about our patient safety initiatives, please contact the Administrative Director of Quality and Safety at 913-676-2664.
