Shawnee Mission Health's (SMH) extensive Pulmonary Rehab program is designed to help patients with lung disease live fuller lives. Our Pulmonary Rehab program offers a multifaceted and highly individualized approach to optimize the overall physical, mental and social functioning of people with chronic lung disease. Each patient will work with a team of pulmonary rehabilitation specialists consisting of respiratory therapists and exercise physiologists.
Pulmonary rehab helps to improve quality of life. Although it cannot cure lung disease, it allows patients to do more with their current lung function.
SMH's program is 12 weeks in length and meets twice a week for sessions lasting 90 minutes. Exercise in the program is based on your ability and will include endurance activities such as walking, cycling, rowing or stepping.
Components of the program include:
• A one-on-one initial assessment to evaluate your medical history, current cardiopulmonary status and
• Rehabilitation sessions which include supervised exercise, education and support
• Trained staff to monitor your heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation and medical symptoms while you
exercise using your individualized exercise plan.
Medicare and most other insurance carriers provide coverage for pulmonary rehabilitation. Pulmonary Rehab requires a physician referral and records from your doctor including results of breathing tests within the last year.
