Shawnee Mission Health's (SMH) extensive Cardiac Rehabilitation program is designed to help patients with heart conditions live healthier lives. Completion of a cardiac rehab program has shown a 20-30 percent reduction in all-cause mortality. Cardiac rehab also reduces the risk of future cardiac events by stabilizing, slowing or even reversing the progression of cardiovascular disease (CVD).
The American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology recommend cardiac rehab. Some of the conditions in which rehab can be of benefit include:
• Heart attack
• Stable chest pain (angina)
• Coronary artery bypass surgery
• Angioplasty and stents
• Heart transplant
• Heart valve replacements or repairs
• Congestive heart failure.
SMH's Cardiac Rehab program offers a multifaceted and highly individualized approach to optimize the overall physical, mental and social functioning of people with heart-related problems. Each patient will work with a team of cardiac rehabilitation specialists, consisting of cardiac nurses, exercise physiologists and a dietitian, who tailor individual exercise and diet programs to meet a patient’s needs. The goal is to improve a patient’s heart performance through exercise, a healthy diet, stress reduction and education.
Our Cardiac Rehabilitation program consists of three phases:
Phase 1 - Inpatient Program
This phase occurs in the hospital focusing on learning about heart disease and initiating low level, progressive physical activity.
Phase 2 - Outpatient Program
The outpatient program provides EKG-monitored exercise sessions, education on heart healthy living and support as you adjust to your heart problem and lifestyle modifications.
The Phase 2 program, which generally lasts 12 weeks, consists of three sessions per week, each lasting one hour and 15 minutes. This program requires a physician referral and is covered by most insurance companies. When you begin the program, you will meet one-on-one with a cardiac nurse for an initial assessment to evaluate your health and set goals for your program. This will guide the staff in creating an individualized treatment plan tailored to your needs.
Exercise in the program is based on your ability and will include endurance activities such as walking, cycling, rowing, jogging or stepping. Our program is certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.
Phase 3 - Maintenance Program
In the maintenance phase, patients have the opportunity to build upon the progress made in Phases 1 and 2. It includes supervised exercise and ongoing support to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
