At Shawnee Mission Cancer Center, we are focused on treating the whole person. We offer many support services and amenities in addition to outstanding clinical care:
Patients have a single point of contact for all aspects of cancer care, allowing them and their families to focus on healing while our professionals provide guidance and assistance every step of the way.
Our financial navigators ensure complex concerns such as billing, insurance and financial assistance options are addressed before the rigor of treatment begins.
Patients can address every aspect of their well-being—including the emotional toll of cancer—with support from our highly respected and caring mental health professional who is focused on the whole health of the patient.
To help minimize patients’ anxiety about treatment, we give each patient a personalized set of expectations about what they will experience physically as they advance through the treatment process. We do this by evaluating the patient’s physical health before treatment begins.
When you’re first diagnosed with cancer,
you may feel like nothing will help you to stay calm or feel better. Chemotherapy
can be long, hard and overwhelming at times. The Shawnee Mission Cancer Center offers art therapy, which can help you to feel more calm and comfortable while you’re having your treatments.
Massage can have many benefits for individuals going through cancer
treatment, including reducing symptoms, promoting relaxation and improving overall well-being. Debbie Hennecke is a licensed massage therapist with special training in massage for patients with cancer. Massage is offered Mondays and Wednesdays for patients, family members and staff.
Janalea Hoffman is a musician, speaker, music therapist and owner/founder of Rhythmic Medicine who leads music therapy at the Shawnee Mission Cancer Center. Her music helps people go deeper within themselves to get in touch with their body rhythms and gain skill in influencing their own health.
The Shawnee Mission Cancer Center is committed to the whole person – mind, body and spirit. Chaplains from our Spiritual Wellness department are available for patients and their support persons at any point during their Cancer Center experience.
Patients can supplement and optimize treatment through naturopathic medicine, an approach that uses natural, non-toxic therapies to treat the whole person. Our naturopathic doctor may work alongside your conventional medical team to address underlying causes of your ailments and chronic health issues.
Camp Bluebird is a special camp sponsored by Shawnee Mission Health (SMH) for adult members of our community who have been diagnosed with cancer. For three days and two nights, campers have a unique opportunity for listening and learning, not only about their disease, but with others like themselves who live with cancer.
