The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at Shawnee Mission Medical Center combines best practice therapy with the proven effectiveness of small group support to build lasting recovery foundations for our patients. Not only do our patients receive coping skills, coaching and therapeutic support from our licensed clinical therapists, they also benefit from the power of pursuing wellness through a shared group experience. Additionally, our IOP patients receive medication management care from our team of experienced psychiatrists. In order to ensure that our patients receive the most effective and influential care, we offer three different focused IOP programs - Mental Health, Addiction Recovery, and Dual Diagnosis.
The Mental Health Intensive Outpatient Program empowers patients to achieve wellness by providing a safe environment for processing emotions mindfully and teaching patients how to utilize coping skills based on Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy models. Licensed mental health therapists guide patients in cultivating healthy balance in activities and relationships while learning to cope with mental illness symptoms. Our patients build life-long mental health recovery skills that help them to overcome difficulties stemming from grief and loss, trauma, depression, anxiety and other mental illnesses.
The Addiction Recovery Intensive Outpatient Program integrates the latest medically-supported information on the disease process of addiction with 12-step principles and therapeutic coping skills to ensure that our patients receive a balanced and effective recovery-oriented experience. Our patients benefit from an open and safe group environment where they can explore how their problems with drugs and/or alcohol have impacted their lives and how they can begin to lead a meaningful life free from addictive substances. Once a week, family members of patients are invited to participate in group to learn how to effectively come alongside their recovering loved one. Additionally, a no cost Aftercare Group, facilitated by a licensed addiction therapist, is offered weekly for one full year for graduating Addiction Recovery IOP patients.
The Dual Diagnosis Intensive Outpatient Program brings restorative care to individuals suffering from both mental illness and substance abuse issues. Leading research reveals that for some individuals, stand-alone mental health or addiction recovery treatment is at best, incomplete, and therefore we offer a comprehensive recovery program uniquely tailored for dually diagnosed patients. Our therapists will assist patients in understanding how substance abuse adversely affects mental health and how self-medication of mental illness may lead to addiction issues. Patients will become empowered through processing and skill building to pursue holistic recovery and wellness.
Our IOP programs meet three times a week for three hours each session and continue for approximately four weeks. We offer programming in the morning as well as in the evening. The IOP building is conveniently located at Shawnee Mission Medical Center’s main campus.
