What is Shawnee Mission Health?
Back in 1962, Shawnee Mission Medical Center’s (SMMC) founders had a vision of a hospital that served one important purpose — caring for the growing Johnson County community. Starting out as a one-story, 65-bed community hospital, SMMC has evolved into a world-class health center that not only serves patients at our Merriam location at I-35 and 75th Street, but at many points throughout Johnson County and the Kansas City metropolitan area.
Our future is about more than being a hospital,” said Ken Bacon, President and CEO of Shawnee Mission Health (SMH). “When the community hears the name Shawnee Mission Health, they should think of a network of health care facilities and providers working to exceed your expectations by delivering quality care with compassion.” For example, in addition to the SMMC campus, the SMH Prairie Star facility has also seen tremendous growth. Located at K-7 and Prairie Star Parkway in western Lenexa, this comprehensive health care facility offers easy access from K-7, K-10, I-435 and I-35 — so area residents can receive care from the most talented and skillful health care professionals in the region.
At SMH Prairie Star, patients can count on a wide variety of health care services, including:
And SMMC and SMH Prairie Star are just the beginning. In the not-too-distant future, the network will add SMH Blue Valley, a third, major health care facility in southern Johnson County near 159th Street and 69 Highway.
Here's What Shawnee Mission Health Means to You
For many area residents, connecting to the SMH network starts with their primary care physician. Scott Woods, Chief Operating Officer of the Shawnee Mission Physicians Group
said, “Day in and day out, Shawnee Mission Primary Care (SMPC) touches the lives of residents throughout the community. We’re dedicated to their long-term health and well-being, and if more serious health challenges occur, we can provide crucial access to the specialists at Shawnee Mission Medical Center.”
From a patient’s point of view, Bacon said, “It is important to make sure you choose a doctor, an urgent care or emergency room in the Shawnee Mission Health network. Having a doctor who is part of this larger network means you are receiving the same coordinated, compassionate care from individuals who live the mission, vision and values that are Shawnee Mission Health.”
Currently, there are seven SMPC locations
throughout Johnson County with more than 30 Board-certified doctors who specialize in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. Each location is a certified patient-centered medical home, so patients can look forward to close relationships with their physicians, resulting in more personalized, coordinated and effective care.
And when you don’t have time to make a doctor’s appointment, but don’t need to go to the Emergency Department, there’s Shawnee Mission Urgent Care located at 91st street and Quivira. Woods said, “Whether you’re a weekend warrior or you hurt your back or cut your hand, you don’t have to wait till Monday to get an appointment with your primary care doctor to receive medical attention.” SMH also extends throughout the area’s business community. Our CorporateCare Occupational Health Network is the only locally owned and operated occupational medicine offering. “CorporateCare manages anything that happens while you’re employed – from work injury management to physical therapy if you get hurt on the job, as well as wellness programs designed to prevent injuries and a promote healthier workforce,” said Woods.
