Merriam, Kan. – Thanks to a grant funded by the Weight Loss Surgery Foundation of America (WLSFA) and Bariatric Center of Kansas City surgeon Brice Hamilton, MD, Ronda Bauwens of Kansas City underwent successful weight-loss surgery on Dec. 17 at the Shawnee Mission Outpatient Pavilion. Bauwens is the first person to receive this grant in the state of Kansas, and the 11th overall.
Bauwens lost both of her parents in 2012 to obesity-related illnesses, which prompted her to make a change in her own life. Thanks to a grant from WLSFA and contributions by Hamilton and the Bariatric Center of Kansas City, Bauwens was able to have weight-loss surgery that will change her life’s path and future.
“After seeing my parents struggle with obesity for years with an end result in their death, I then realized I must do something,” said Bauwens. “I was following in the same path as them and after several diets that failed, I know I couldn’t lose the weight on my own. I have tried for the last three years to get the funds for weight-loss surgery and like many, my insurance didn’t cover it. Thanks to WLSFA and Dr. Hamilton, I can now live a healthier, more vibrant life, one my parents would have wanted me to live.”
An estimated 300,000 American die each year from obesity-related illness, and less than 1 percent of morbidly-obese Americans have weight-loss surgery, due in part to insurance restrictions of covering the procedures. WLSFA is a nonprofit organization that provides grants to individuals seeking weight-loss surgery and is powered by donations from fellow patients, medical professionals and industry partners. Dr. Hamilton and his team contributed their services as part of the WLSFA Grant Program.
The Bariatric Center of Kansas City assists patients who battle obesity in losing those dangerous – and sometimes fatal – extra pounds. In collaboration with Shawnee Mission Medical Center’s Bariatric Surgery Program, the free-standing, full-service bariatric surgery center located at the Shawnee Mission Outpatient Pavilion in west Lenexa, offers a state-of-the-art facility where all services are provided in one setting, making it one of the most unique in the nation. Recognized as a Center of Excellence by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program, the program has a proven record of producing some of the best patient outcomes in the nation, and performed more than 900 surgeries in 2013.
