Merriam, Kan. – Shawnee Mission Medical Center (SMMC) has been named Top Performer on Key Quality Measures® by The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of health care organizations in America. SMMC was recognized by The Joint Commission for exemplary performance in using evidence-based clinical processes that are shown to improve care for certain conditions.
SMMC is one of 1,099 hospitals in the U.S., and the only hospital in Johnson and Wyandotte counties, earning the distinction for attaining and sustaining excellence in accountability measure performance. The hospital was recognized for its achievement on the following measure sets: Heart Attack, Heart Care, Pneumonia and Surgical Care. The ratings are based on accountability measure data reported to The Joint Commission during the 2012 calendar year.
Last week, SMMC was given an A grade in patient safety from The Leapfrog Group, a national leader and advocate in hospital transparency. Each year, The Leapfrog Group assigns hospitals a Hospital Safety Score, available to consumers at HospitalSafetyScore.org. This score represents a hospital’s overall performance in keeping patients safe from preventable harm and medical errors.
“These two designations are more evidence that we are successfully moving toward our goal of becoming Kansas City’s top hospital in quality, safety and patient experience,” said Ken Bacon, President and CEO of Shawnee Mission Medical Center. “Our physicians and associates continually challenge themselves to achieve the highest level of patient care. It’s nice to be recognized for that, but it’s the positive impact on our patients that is most gratifying.”
