SMMC continually strives to attain the highest standards of quality patient care. These achievements illustrate SMMC’s commitment to go above and beyond to ensure the best possible health care SMMC has been recognized three times as one of the nation’s top 100 hospitals.

SMMC was named the most preferred hospital in the Kansas City metropolitan area in a consumer survey conducted by National Research Corporation. The Web-based survey polled nearly 1,500 health care consumers throughout Kansas City in 2009 about their hospital preferences based on both personal experiences and perception. In addition to being named the most preferred hospital, consumers named SMMC Kansas City’s leader in the other following categories: best nurses, most personalized care, best accommodations/amenities, highest patient safety, best community health programs, Web site used most often and most conveniently located.

Shawnee Mission Medical Center (SMMC) has earned the Gold Seal of Approval™ from The Joint Commission for Primary Stroke Centers. SMMC earned this distinction after the Joint Commission conducted an on-site review in January.

In 2010, the Diabetes Center was accredited by the American Diabetes Association for meeting the national standard for diabetes self-management education.

The Wound Care Center® at Shawnee Mission Medical Center (SMMC) is pleased to announce that it has earned the Diversified Clinical Services Center of Distinction award for delivering outstanding clinical results for 12 consecutive months in 2009. For the third consecutive year, the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Get With The Guidelines program gave SMMC its CAD Gold Sustained Performance Achievement Recognition. SMMC was the first hospital in Kansas and the Kansas City metropolitan area to receive this award. Get With The Guidelines also awarded SMMC CHF Silver Performance Achievement Recognition and Stroke Silver Plus Performance Achievement Recognition.

SMMC was the first Chest Pain Emergency Center in Kansas City and one of the first 75 in the nation to earn accreditation.

To improve patient safety and assist obstetrics physicians, SMMC was the first hospital in the Kansas City area to launch a full-time OB Hospitalist program in February 2008. An OB hospitalist, employed by SMMC, is available around-the-clock to direct treatment of maternity patients when their doctor isn’t on-site or to assist in emergency situations.
