Own the Bone

Merriam, Kan. – Did you know that osteoporosis (a disorder resulting in low bone density) and fragility fractures (low impact fractures) have been identified as major public health problems by the United States Surgeon General? Approximately 44 million Americans are affected by osteoporosis. In fact, most are unaware they have osteoporosis until they have a fracture, and 80 percent of these patients do not receive appropriate treatment.

The statistics are staggering. There are two million fragility fractures a year, which is more than heart attacks, strokes and breast cancer combined. In addition, half of all women and one-fourth of all men will suffer fragility fractures in their lifetimes.

Shawnee Mission Health (SMH) is committed to providing the best possible care for our fragility fracture and osteoporosis patients and is the first hospital network in Kansas to participate in Own the Bone®, a quality improvement program developed by the American Orthopaedic Association.

Own the Bone® will be an important tool to help SMH identify, evaluate, treat and improve care in patients over ages 50 who suffer from an osteoporosis, or low bone-density related fragility fractures. The program is intended to educate patients and their health care providers with a goal toward reducing future bone fractures and promoting treatment for osteoporosis and bone health.

If you would like more information about Own the Bone® or SHM’s orthopedic services, please contact Beth Armstrong, RN, MSN, Director of Orthopedic and Spine Center, at 913-632-2571.
