Merriam, Kan. – Shawnee Mission Medical Center (SMMC) has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™ for its inpatient diabetes care program by demonstrating compliance with The Joint Commission’s national standards for health care quality and safety in disease-specific care. The certification award recognizes SMMC’s dedication to continuous compliance with The Joint Commission’s state-of-the-art standards.
SMMC underwent a rigorous on-site review on March 3. A team of Joint Commission expert reviewers evaluated SMMC for compliance with the requirements for The Joint Commission’s Disease-Specific Care Certification program as well as inpatient diabetes care-specific standards, clinical practice guidelines and performance measures. The inpatient diabetes certification program is based on the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Clinical Practice Recommendations.
“This certification confirms our standard of excellence in caring for our patients with diabetes,” said Sandie Anderson, APRN-BC, CDE, Diabetes Center Manager. “Our team of physicians and clinicians are dedicated to continuous improvement to help ensure our patients have a safer environment for their diabetes care. I am blessed to work in a hospital that strives for this level of excellence.”
SMMC’s inpatient diabetes program helps individuals meet the challenge of living with diabetes both in and out of the hospital. During their stay, patients receive counseling on how to best manage their condition, including how to test blood sugar levels, determine target levels, manage medications and fit exercise into their daily routines. Patients also learn how to tell if blood sugar levels are too high or too low and proper ways to treat both situations.
