SMMC Introduces Name Change
Merriam, Kan. – Over the past 50 years, Shawnee Mission Medical Center (SMMC) has evolved into a world-class health center that not only serves patients at its Merriam campus at I-35 and 75th Street, but at many points throughout Johnson County, Kan., and the Kansas City metropolitan area. To better reflect its expanded reach and services, SMMC has named its network of health care facilities and providers as Shawnee Mission Health.
“Our future is about more than being a hospital,” said Ken Bacon, President and CEO of SMH. “When the community hears Shawnee Mission Health, they should think of a network of health care facilities and providers working to exceed patients’ expectations by delivering quality care with compassion.
The hospital will continue to be referenced as SMMC, and the Shawnee Mission Outpatient Pavilion in west Lenexa – which features a full-service emergency department, imaging, bariatric surgery, primary care and more – has been renamed to Shawnee Mission Health Prairie Star (SMH Prairie Star). In the future, the network will add Shawnee Mission Health Blue Valley, a third, major health care facility in southern Johnson County near 159th Street and 69 Highway.
SMH represents the complete network of care led by nearly 700 physicians representing 50 medical specialties including cancer, heart care, orthopedics, robotic surgery, women’s health and bariatrics. SMH recently opened the Shawnee Mission Cancer Center on the Merriam campus, providing a continuum of care for cancer patients including medical oncology, radiation oncology, infusion therapies and other on-site integrative treatments and cancer support services. In addition, SMH Prairie Star opened a second medical office building in February that houses its expanded Therapy Specialties facility and physician practices to better serve the growing population of west Lenexa.
As Johnson County’s most preferred provider of emergency care, with Emergency Department locations at its Merriam and Prairie Star campuses, SMH treats nearly 70,000 patients annually. For immediate care in less serious situations, Shawnee Mission Urgent Care at 91st and Quivira is available for walk-in service seven days a week.
SMH’s emphasis on the improved health of the community remains steadfast. SMH provides support to many area not-for-profit organizations that share its mission of improving overall health for the region’s residents.
