SMMC Partners with Local Restaurants in Honor of American Heart Month
MERRIAM, Kan. – February marks the beginning of American Hearth Month, dedicated to raising awareness of heart disease, the leading cause of death for both men and women. Shawnee Mission Medical Center (SMMC) is proud to partner with four Johnson County, Kan., restaurants and encourage better heart health.

Throughout the month of February, restaurants Grand Street Café (Lenexa), Paulo & Bill (Shawnee), Story (Prairie Village) and Ya Ya’s (Overland Park), will offer heart-healthy dishes while donating a portion of proceeds from those items to the Shawnee Mission Heart & Vascular Center.

“We’re thrilled to partner with these wonderful local restaurants that are helping us raise awareness for American Heart Month and educating people about both heart disease and heart health,” said Vickie Franck, Executive Director, Shawnee Mission Heart & Vascular Services.

The heart-healthy dishes being featured by SMMC’s restaurant partners throughout February include:

  • Beet salad with roasted red beets, pickled golden beets, citrus fig vinaigrette, poached fig goat cheese truffle, pistachio, fresh clementines, baby greens and baguette tartine (Grand Street Café, Lenexa)
  • Whole wheat pasta with basil, tomatoes, asparagus, garlic, olive oil, spinach and feta cheese (Paulo & Bill, Shawnee)
  • Arctic Char with turnips, butternut squash, cauliflower and celery root puree (Story, Prairie Village)
  • Watercress arugula salad with orange supreme, feta cheese, flax seed and citrus vinaigrette; steamed Colorado striped bass with snow peas, carrot, broccoli, spinach and lemon fumet (Ya Ya’s, Overland Park)
Story Chef Carl Thorne-Thomsen, FOOD & WINE Magazine’s 2013 People’s Best New Chef: Midwest Winner and James Beard Foundation Best Chef Midwest semifinalist, said he’s looking forward to featuring a heart-healthy dish that his customers will enjoy while also keeping heart health top-of-mind.

"I am excited to partner with Shawnee Mission Medical Center for American Heart Month. It's an honor to help raise funds for this great program. Heart healthy food can be delicious,” said Thorne-Thomsen.

Home to Kansas City’s first Accredited Chest Pain Center, SMMC offers sophisticated medical technology for cardiac and vascular care. Patients receive services from highly specialized Board-certified physicians including cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, neurologists, radiologists, vascular surgeons, emergency medicine physicians and critical care specialists.

“One of the best ways to fight heart disease is by following a healthy diet,“ said SMMC cardiologist Jay Jackson, MD. “Try to incorporate a wide variety of nutritious foods into your meals, or order one of the healthy options from the menu the next time you dine out. Even small steps can make a big difference in your overall heart health.”

SMMC’s HEARTaware program was developed to raise awareness of heart disease in the Greater Kansas City community. The program includes a free, seven-minute heart-risk assessment and three comprehensive screening packages that will help further identify the risk for a heart attack or stroke.
