Lymphedema Program
Lymphedema refers to the swelling that occurs most often in your arms or legs that occurs when there is a blockage in your lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is a system of small tubes that run through the body carrying colorless liquid called lymph. If the lymph does not drain properly it causes a blockage.
There are two types of Lymphedema: primary and secondary. With primary Lymphedema, symptoms can be present during infancy, adolescence or around 35 to 40. The cause is usually lack of development of the lymphatic system. Secondary Lymphedema is most common and may occur after lymph node dissection, radiation, infection, trauma or prolonged venous stasis.
Treatment
First-time patients will have an evaluation to determine whether they have primary or secondary Lymphedema. After the evaluation, the Lymphedema Team works with the patient to determine the best treatment. There is no cure for Lymphedema, but there are many treatments that will reduce the swelling and discomfort. Some of these treatments include:
- Manual lymph drainage: a special massage technique that may encourage the flow of lymph fluid out of your arm or leg, decreasing the amount of swelling
- Pressure bandaging: application of multilayer gradient compression bandages to encourage lymph fluid to flow back out of your affected limb and toward the trunk of your body. Depending on the location and the severity of the swelling, patients may be able to apply the compression bandages themselves. But often, family members or other caregivers are educated so they are able to aid in the process.
- Exercise: light exercises that require you to move your affected arm or leg may encourage movement of the lymph fluid out of your limb.
Our comprehensive treatment program includes:
- Education on skin care, lymphedema precautions and prevention of infection
- Exercise prescription
- Manual lymph drainage
- Multi-layered, short stretch, compression bandaging
- Measuring and fitting for compression garments.
