The end of the leash
Teach me to see what I still don't see. Whatever wrongs I've done, I'll do it no more.' Job 34:32
Dogs at one end…human at the other end. Who will learn the most? Who will “get it” sooner?
At the end of the leashes are two six month old Golden Retrievers…Finnegan and Piper. My wife and I quickly realized when they arrived in January that life was going to be very different.
Transformers!
And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness 2 Cor 3:18
Ever had someone say:
- Turn that frown upside down!
- Think happy thoughts…
- It could be worse…
- You’ll get over it…
- It takes more muscles to frown than to smile!
- Time heals all hurts…
- Don’t worry; there are more fish in the sea…
Each of those has been offered to you during some moment of despair, discouragement or disappointment. You might have heard them enough that you offer them to others…the kids, associates, patients, even strangers!
Lord make me…
But he's already made it plain how to live, what to do, what GOD is looking for in men and women. It's quite simple: Do what is fair and just to your neighbor, be compassionate and loyal in your love, and don't take yourself too seriously — take God seriously. Mic 6:8
How would you complete that sentence…Lord make me…? Do words like patient, strong, energetic, caring, encouraging, forgiving come to mind?
How would most of the folk who come here each day looking for help complete it? Would words like; better, healthy, safe, patient, understanding, trusting come to their minds?
Interesting that words like; pretty, wealthy, powerful, popular don’t come to mind and in fact seem entirely out of place in the context of a center of healing.
Don’t get discouraged!
And let us not get tired of doing what is right, for after a while we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don't get discouraged and give up. Gal 6:9 TLB
Ever ask yourself “What difference do I make?”, “Why do I do things when no one seems to notice, or if they do, don’t seem to care?”
Ever stop doing what you know to be good or right or faithful because you gave up trying? Remember the feelings that went along with that? Initially you felt justified, even free, but later came a sense of letting yourself or others down, because you gave up. It happens to most of us at one time or another.
Gimme shelter!
O God, have pity, for I am trusting you! I will hide beneath the shadow of your wings until this storm is past. Ps 57:1-2
The Rolling Stones describe one of life’s ever-present dynamics in their song, “Gimme Shelter”: “Oh, a storm is threat'ning My very life today If I don't get some shelter Oh yeah, I'm gonna fade away “You can hear Jagger sing the words, but more importantly you have experienced the angst of the storms of life that arrive without respect to time, place or readiness!
