Compassion Fatigue: Too Much Caring, Not Enough Me
First Annual Steve Jeffers Lecture on Spirituality in Health
Compassion fatigue, also known as secondary traumatic stress disorder, is a state of physical, emotional and spiritual exhaustion in a caregiver who becomes traumatized by the suffering of others and from the stress of caring for them. Those in the helping professions, including health care, are at risk. Symptoms may appear rather suddenly, and recovery can be rapid. Harold Ivan Smith explores how caregivers can develop strategies and techniques to better care for themselves while also dealing with the stressors of practicing medicine.
