100,000 Babies and Counting

Shawnee Mission Medical Center (SMMC) is preparing to welcome its 100,000th baby. As of October, more than 99,750 babies have been delivered since 1962 and the hospital averages 250 births per month.

SMMC Once Again Achieves Status as an Accredited Chest Pain Center

Shawnee Mission Medical Center (SMMC) has received Chest Pain Center Accreditation for another three years from the Society of Chest Pain Centers (SCPC), an international organization dedicated to eliminating heart disease as the number one cause of death worldwide.

Hospitals that have received SCPC accreditation have verified they have achieved a higher level of expertise in dealing with patients who arrive with symptoms of a heart attack. They emphasize the importance of standardized diagnostic and treatment programs that provide more efficient and effective evaluation as well as more appropriate and rapid treatment of patients with chest pain and other heart attack symptoms. They also serve as a point of entry into the health care system to evaluate and treat other medical problems, and help to promote a healthier lifestyle in an attempt to reduce the risk factors for heart attack.

Providing Compassionate Care After Abuse

Domestic violence is the single largest cause of injury to women in the U.S. In fact, 37 percent of emergency room visits by women are for violence-related injuries caused by an intimate partner. One in eight women in Kansas have suffered sexual violence and more than 77 percent of the time, the attacker knows their victim.

Physical abuse and sexual assault cases are very personal and often frightening. Individuals may feel alone and unsure of what to do next. The Forensic Assessment Consultation and Treatment (FACT) program at Shawnee Mission Medical Center (SMMC) offers a forensic examination and photography to anyone who has been physically or sexually assaulted.
