Be Aware! March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month
According to the Colon Cancer Alliance, colorectal cancer is the third most diagnosed cancer in both women and men combined. A former Shawnee Mission Medical Center patient knows far too well the effects this disease has on a person, but now after defeating cancer, she is dedicated to living her life to the fullest and educating those who may be at risk.
SMMC Hits 2,000 Robotic Surgeries in February
On Wednesday, February 27, the Shull Institute for Surgical Robotics at Shawnee Mission Medical Center (SMMC) performed its 2,000th robotic surgery. The procedure was a robotic cholecystectomy, which is the removal of the gallbladder. Scott Ellison, MD, performed the surgery.
SMMC was the first hospital in a five-state area to begin using the da Vinci® surgical robot in 2002. The da Vinci is used for a variety of procedures at SMMC including urology, kidney, thoracic, single and multi-site general surgery, as well as gynecologic surgeries including myomectomies.
Local Foods Enhance Garden Café Dining
Dining at Shawnee Mission Medical Center (SMMC) has changed-and for the better! As an organization committed to the health and well-being of the community, it was important to Director of Nutrition Services Susan Larcom to create an initiative that offered associates, patients and visitors healthier dining options.
ImPACT Concussion Program Benefits Area High School Athletes
With the fall sports season underway, 11 area high schools are being served by Shawnee Mission Medical Center’s (SMMC) SportsCare program. The SportsCare outreach athletic training staff visits the Shawnee Mission and Blue Valley school districts, along with Bishop Miege High School, prior to the beginning of the fall season to administer an ImPACT Neurocognitive Baseline test to athletes. ImPACT is a research-based computer test developed to help clinicians evaluate an athlete’s recovery following a concussion.
