Help a Couple Pursue the Dream of Parenthood with Egg Donation
“Women who decide to donate eggs are giving a couple the invaluable opportunity to build a family,” said Colleen Milroy, MD, who specializes in reproductive medicine and infertility.
RMI frequently sees patients who have undergone premature menopause, survived cancer therapy, carry genetic diseases or who, because of their age, may have diminished reproductive efficiency. Those who decide to donate eggs give these women the opportunity to conceive.
“There are altruistic and monetary benefits for women who donate eggs. Not only are they helping couples become parents and grow their families, they are also provided with generous compensation,” Milroy said.
Women who are interested in egg donation must meet certain criteria. They must be between 21 and 32-years-old, have medical insurance, a healthy medical and genetic history and a healthy, non-smoking lifestyle. They must also be willing to participate in the in vitro fertilization process, which includes clinic visits, vaginal ultrasounds, blood tests and injections.
“To be eligible for egg donation, it is essential that the donor meets all of the provided criteria,” Milroy said.
Once an egg donor has been confirmed, the egg donation process takes a few weeks. The process begins with the confirmed donor taking medication to encourage development of multiple eggs. Once she has grown 10-15 eggs, the eggs are retrieved at the hospital. The egg retrieval procedure is performed under anesthesia and generally takes about 15 minutes.
“The whole process is completely anonymous,” Milroy said.
Those who meet the established criteria and are interested in helping a couple pursue their dream of parenthood must fill out an online information questionnaire. Once the questionnaire is completed, the interested donor will be contacted by a third-party reproductive nurse to review the information and perform a health-screening interview.
“The families egg donors are helping are so thankful and gracious. The happiness they give to families is absolutely priceless,” Milroy said.
