“With a variety of different clinics available, choosing the right place to receive care can be confusing,” said Scott Woods, Director of Shawnee Mission Urgent Care and Shawnee Mission Corporate Care. “Urgent care awareness is important because it helps let people know when it is appropriate to choose urgent care.”
In general, Shawnee Mission Urgent Care compliments the physician by offering immediate care by a doctor when the physician’s office is closed or it is not possible to schedule a same-day appointment. Urgent care treats illnesses and injuries without an appointment.
“We treat patients of all ages, 362 days out of the year,” said Holly Martin, Shawnee Mission Urgent Care Manager. “We offer a wide range of services for acute health issues.”
Shawnee Mission Urgent Care offers treatment for a variety of illnesses including colds, flu, sore throats, asthma, allergic reactions, nausea and vomiting, rashes and skin irritations, dehydration, ear/nose/throat and upper respiratory infections and more. In addition, Shawnee Mission Urgent Care handles injuries including lacerations, sprains, strains and minor fractures.
“What people may not know is that we also offer services that are not usually available at the doctor’s office, like X-ray and wound management,” Martin said.
While most of Shawnee Mission Urgent Care’s services are available at the ED, choosing an urgent care clinic for less serious conditions can save patients time and money, while keeping the ED available for those with more serious conditions.
“If urgent care is used in the appropriate situations, it can be extraordinarily effective,” Woods said.
However, if you experience chest pain, severe bleeding, head trauma, loss of consciousness, difficulty breathing or sudden loss or blurring of vision, head to the ED. Do not take chances with life-threatening situations.
If you have a health related question or need assistance determining whether to go to the ED or Urgent Care, call the ASK-A-NURSE Resource Center at 913-676-7777 to speak with a registered nurse 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
