SMMC’s Surgical Robotics Program Benefits Both Patients and DoctorsShawnee Mission Medical Center (SMMC) has recently enhanced the Shull Institute for Surgical Robotics to further improve patient experience and surgical outcomes.
SMMC was the first hospital in a five-state area to begin using the da Vinci® surgical robot in 2002 and is currently the only facility in Johnson County using the technology. The da Vinci is used for a variety of procedures at SMMC, including urology, reproductive endocrinology, pelvic floor reconstructions and gynecologic surgeries. Additionally, SMMC plans to expand the Shull Institute for Surgical Robotics to include thoracic surgeries and recently added a second robot.

SMMC Receives Gold Seal for Approval in Inpatient Diabetes Care
Shawnee Mission Medical Center (SMMC) recently received The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™ for its inpatient diabetes program by demonstrating compliance with The Joint Commission’s national standards for health care quality and safety in disease-specific care. SMMC is the first and only hospital in the Kansas City metro area and the state of Kansas to receive this award.
