Spiritual Blindness

mark_stoddart“What do you want me to do for you?" Jesus asked him. The blind man said, "Rabbi, I want to see." Mark 10:51NIV

I’ve always been fascinated by the process of sight.  It begins with light entering the eye through the cornea, this light is focused and bent and directed through many complex processes to a point at which light changes into electrical and chemical signals that are processed in the visual cortex.  “The billions of cells in our visual cortex have highly specialized functions.  Some send projections to other areas of the brain where memory and association occur.  Most add up, combine, exchange, and organize countless bits of visual data in some mysterious way.  The result is the miracle of perception.” (Steven Mosley, “Psalms, A Language of the Heart”)

The Greatest Love of All

mark_stoddartGreater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13

On Saturday afternoon February 11, 2011 the voice of the greatest female pop and R&B vocalist of all time, certainly of my lifetime, was silenced by the hand of death.  Whitney Houston sold over 100 million albums during a career that spanned three decades.  One of her biggest hits was the song, "The Greatest Love of All", in which she encouraged us to love our ourselves, stating that learning to love yourself was the greatest love of all.  While self-love is laudable and necessary for good emotional health, Whitney was only partly right and sadly did not appear to consistently take her own counsel, "The biggest devil is me. I'm either my best friend or my worst enemy,"  she told Diane Sawyer in 2002.  I’m sure that can be said of most of us.

Let There Be Light

mark_stoddart“And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.” Genesis 1:3 KJV

The creation account recorded in the first book of the Bible begins with the Spirit of God hovering over a world that is in complete darkness and disorder.   Some have used the word chaos to describe this initial state after God had spoken the world into being.  The first words attributed to God in scripture are, “Let there be light”.  At that command, light dispelled darkness and the work of putting things into creative order began.  By the end of the sixth day the world was completed and populated, “And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good.”  Genesis 1:31 KJV

Trusting God

mark_stoddart“Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain.In vain you rise early
and stay up late, toiling for food to eat - for he grants sleep to those he loves.” (Psalm 127:1, 2 NIV)

We start having dreams for our lives as little children.  “When I grow up I want to be…”  As we mature our dreams turn into plans.  Some of those plans are based on our natural endowments or proclivities and some are based on knowledge and skills acquired through learning, whether that is scholastic or experiential.  We plan for our careers, our families, our locations and our retirements.  Some are general plans and some are very detailed timelines with specific occurrences that must take place in order for the next event to follow.

Trust

mark_stoddart“And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.” Psalm 9:10 KJV

A name identifies an individual, a family, an organization or even a country.  But a name also has to do with reputation or character.  When you hear a name like, “Craftsman”, you think of reliable American tools.  When you hear the name, “Maytag”, you think of a washer and dryer that will stand the test of time.  The names of certain individuals like, Mahatma Gandhi, brings to mind a man of peace or Mother Teresa, compassion.
