About the Foundation

Private philanthropy has played a key role in the history of Shawnee Mission Medical Center.  Even before the hospital opened its doors on May 14, 1962, a small group of individuals raised funds, propelled by a vision to serve the health needs of budding Johnson County.  The realization of that vision entailed much sacrifice over the years, but these pioneers provided the spark which led to the creation of a vital resource for the community.

The Foundation for Shawnee Mission Medical Center was chartered on March 8, 1978 as a separate, supporting organization to the Medical Center.
