Cardiac Rehabilitation
Cardiac Rehabilitation is a supervised program that includes exercise, education and emotional support for patients who have had a heart attack, bypass surgery or other heart problems.
At the Shawnee Mission Heart & Vascular Center, we strive to foster lifestyle changes that help patients regain and maintain the best possible physical and emotional health. The Cardiac Rehabilitation program at Shawnee Mission Medical Center involves three distinct phases:
Phase I
Supervised, progressive activity while the patient is hospitalized.
Phase II
An outpatient program lasting up to 12 weeks that consists of monitored aerobic exercise sessions and risk factor modification. Goals of Phase II include:
- Recognition and response to symptoms
- Understanding and compliance with treatment plan
- Improving exercise tolerance Emotional support and adjustment to disease
- Developing an education foundation for lifestyle modification and risk factor reduction
Phase III
A supervised maintenance phase. Goals of Phase III include:
- Maintaining optimal functional capacity
- Reinforcing educational foundation
- Maintaining compliance and lifestyle changes
