Wound Care Center Provides Integrated Care
A wound that does not heal is frustrating, time-consuming and expensive. If you are not seeing significant improvement in a wound's healing process within a few weeks, consider a specialty consultation with Shawnee Mission Health's (SMH) Wound Care Center®. Our team of experts includes medical and surgical physicians of various specialties and a nursing staff with advanced training in wound care - all working together in a single location, providing integrated care for patients.
For the vast majority of wounds, healing follows a relatively brief, simple and short course, but some chronic wounds are exceptions to the rule. Wounds can be hard to heal if you have one or more of these conditions:
- Poor circulation
Bad veins or frequent swelling
Problems with recurrent infections
Pressure on areas from inability to move normally or severe illness.
Our affiliation with Healogics.com, the national leader in quality wound care, provides specialized professional education, proven clinical pathways, a tested quality management process and comparative data for benchmarking quality.
The Wound Care Center at SMH is a past winner of the Diversified Clinical Services Center of Distinction award for delivering outstanding clinical results for 12 consecutive months. The award recognizes SMH's achievement in meeting or exceeding benchmarks in healing outcomes, patient satisfaction, outlier management and days to heal.
SMH offers two convenient Wound Care Center locations so patients can receive treatment in a location close to home.
SMH's Wound Care Center begins with a comprehensive patient evaluation to develop an individualized, aggressive treatment program for non-healing wounds. Our services include interdisciplinary, comprehensive wound management that integrates advanced wound care techniques, products and services.
Most patients require a series of outpatient visits over a couple months to result in healing. During this time, patients also receive a variety of educational support services, such as caring for wounds at home, nutrition, exercises and other measures to aid healing and prevention of wounds. Patients remain in the care of their primary care physician and other specialty providers, as our main priority is healing the wound. As a department of SMH, the Wound Care Center helps patients benefit from on-site collaboration with physical therapists, nutritionists, social workers and diabetes educators, as well as a full range of diagnostic services.
The comprehensive care provided at the Wound Care Center allows 95 percent of patients to heal their wounds in an average of less than two months, compared to the national average of five months.
