Having a child is one of the most exciting and overwhelming events you may ever experience. Motherhood is challenging, especially as you learn how to fit into your new role as "Mom" and balance the needs of your family.
Postpartum mood disorders, including postpartum depression, are not uncommon. In fact, 20 percent of new moms experience some type of postpartum mood disorder, which can occur any time during the first year after birth. If you notice that you are feeling worse as time goes on, it is important that you let someone know how you are feeling. Do not let feelings of guilt, shame or embarrassment get in the way of doing what you need to do to feel better.
Shawnee Mission Medical Center is here to help you manage your health and ease the transition into motherhood with the following resources.
In the Hospital
At the Shawnee Mission Birth Center, all new moms complete a Postpartum Depression Risk Assessment. This simple, short questionnaire helps mothers assess their feelings after childbirth, while helping our staff ensure individuals at high risk receive the education, resources and care they need before they leave the hospital.
After You Go Home
Once you get home, caring for a new baby can be challenging and isolating. Don't be afraid or ashamed to seek help if your feelings become overwhelming. Shawnee Mission Medical Center offers the Postpartum Emotional Support Group, the only hospital-based support group in the Kansas City metro area. Led by a Licensed Social Worker, it is structured to give moms the information they need to understand emotional changes involved with all postpartum mood disorders and the tools to feel better.
Participants are welcome to join the group at any time and do not need to register beforehand. For more information, call 913-632-4223.
