Maternal Fetal Specialists (MFS)

At Shawnee Mission Medical Center, we offer the services of a comprehensive maternal-fetal medicine team. Caring for both the mother and baby in higher risk situations requires more intense attention, and with our team of specialists (a perinatologist / high risk obstetrician, sonographers skilled at detailed ultrasound, nurses and genetic counselor) we can offer all of the services necessary to meet the needs of mothers and their babies. Whether we meet with a family once for a fine-detail ultrasound, counsel families about risks for genetic disorders and how to test for them, or co-manage a pregnancy complicated by medical problems, Maternal Fetal Specialists are here every day to provide that reassurance for even the most complicated pregnancies.

MFS provides both outpatient and inpatient services, covering consultation, ultrasound, amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling, genetic counseling and diabetic management. We work together with a mother’s obstetrician, family physician or nurse midwife so that she can remain with her own care providers while receiving the high risk care that provides a safety net for mother and baby. We also provide a referral service to pediatric specialists for families carrying a child who may need surgery or specific newborn care. It is our goal that families experience compassion and understanding from our team, and come away with a clear plan for their pregnancy care.
