Birth Center

Shawnee Mission Medical Center (SMMC) has long been a leader in caring for women, children and families. Today, our new Shawnee Mission Birth Center is a beautiful example of our commitment to providing you with state-of-the-art health care in a warm, soothing environment. And as the hospital that delivers the most babies in the metro, our commitment to women is clear.

Nearly 4,000 families choose SMMC to deliver their babies each year, not because of our delivery rooms or amenities, but because of our outstanding doctors and dedicated nursing staff who design a safe, personalized birth experience for every new mom. Today, we’re pleased to have a beautiful facility – featuring a spa-inspired environment for delivering moms and a Level III NICU with private rooms for our tiniest patients – that meets the level of experienced care our medical staff has always provided.

Our nurses and doctors work with you to plan a safe delivery experience – no matter your approach to childbirth. In addition, anesthesiologists are available 24 hours a day to meet your pain management requests. A Board-certified OB/Gyn is also here at all times to provide care as needed in emergency situations.

From our outstanding nursing and medical staff, to our childbirth education programs, the Shawnee Mission Birth Center takes every step to ensure you are comfortable, both physically and emotionally, during your stay with us.

Breastfeeding Support

Because we know newborns sometimes need a little extra help getting used to breastfeeding, the Shawnee Mission Birth Center has Certified Lactation Consultants available to answer questions and help troubleshoot feeding difficulties before you return home. In addition, we offer a Breastfeeding Warm Line to answer questions that arise after you leave the hospital. Call 913-632-4330 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., seven days a week, and leave your name, phone number and question and a consultant will get back with you the same day.

A Breastfeeding Support Group is also held every Tuesday from 10-11:30 a.m. in the Life Dynamics Building, 9120 W. 75th Street, Shawnee Mission, KS.

Extra Special Care

We provide one nurse who takes care of you and your baby, in the same room. Your nurse is specially prepared to give you practical infant care tips on diapering, bathing, feeding and relating to your baby. Your nurse will also help you pace your activities with those of your baby so you can establish a comfortable routine at home. It’s all part of the extra special care new moms deserve.

Maternity Care Coordinator

A meeting with our Maternity Care Coordinator approximately four weeks prior to your due date will help you feel at ease and prepared to bring your new addition into the world. Our Maternity Care Coordinator will:

  • Assess your needs and expectations for delivery
  • Familiarize you with what to expect during your hospital stay
  • Complete hospital consent forms and paperwork prior to admission
  • Find information and other resources that might be of assistance to your personal pregnancy situation

Everyone who visits with the Maternity Care Coordinator will receive a copy of our book. This book is a comprehensive guide including what to expect at the hospital and caring for mom and baby after birth. To schedule an appointment with our Maternity Care Coordinator, call 913-632-4233.

Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Babies who require extra medical and nursing attention are cared for in our Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), where specially educated neonatal nurses, nurse practitioners and neonatologists from Children’s Mercy Hospital care for infants 28-40 weeks gestation.

Located on the fourth floor of the Shawnee Mission Birth Center, the NICU features 24 private, single-family rooms for mothers and their babies. Four rooms are designed to accommodate twins. Each nurses’ station is designed to be close and serve no more than eight NICU rooms to ensure continuous oversight and care required by NICU babies.

A Family Retreat Area with a fireplace, kitchenette and private bath allows parents a quiet place to rest and rejuvenate their spirits.
