With all of the attention breast cancer receives in October, many women don’t think about breast cancer screenings the rest of the year. But for the women who work at Shawnee Mission Medical Center’s (SMMC) Breast Center it’s an important topic every month. The team of experienced mammography techs, radiologists and patient navigators want women to think about preventative screenings year-round. They are so excited about it, they wrote a song and made a music video to remind women to get annual mammograms.
Breast Center mammo-techs and managers took center stage to perform a number that we hope will not soon be forgotten. “Go girlfriend, get your mammogram” is a phrase the Breast Center wants repeated across not only Kansas City, but also the United States. Char Wallace, manager of the Breast Center and the songwriter said, “I wanted to find a fun way to remind women of the importance of preventative screenings. Annual mammograms save lives and I hope this fun reminder will increase awareness year-round, not just in October.”
The team decided to enlist a local videographer to help turn it into a video. Watch the video below and forward it to your girlfriends, reminding them to take just a few minutes for a screening that can save their life.
