What happens during minimally-invasive surgery?
Traditional open surgery often involves large incisions and extensive post-operative care. MIS is different. The procedure is performed through small dime-sized incisions. Using sophisticated techniques and specialized tools such as miniature cameras and high-definition monitors, surgeons in many specialties can perform major surgeries through incisions that require only a stitch or two to close.
Just like traditional surgery, patients are asleep during MIS procedures. Before and during surgery, their experience is no different than that of patients undergoing traditional open procedures. It’s not until recovery begins that they become aware of the tremendous benefits this technology provides.
How do I know if I am a candidate?
Your doctor will assess your health history, current condition, age and other indicators. You and your loved ones will have the opportunity to read literature and discuss available surgery options with MIS experts. In addition, you can learn more about certain procedures at ShawneeMission.org.
What procedures does Shawnee Mission Medical Center (SMMC) offer using the minimally-invasive technique?
How long will I need to be in the hospital?
Many patients go home on the same day or within 48 hours. SMMC does so many MIS procedures that the average length of stay for patients is the shortest of all area hospitals.
Is the MIS technique safe?
Patients who undergo MIS experience fewer post-operative infections and a smaller amount of blood loss than patients who undergo traditional open surgery.
How will I cope with post-surgical pain?
Smaller incisions mean less trauma to the body. MIS patients experience far less discomfort and the need for pain medication is significantly reduced.
How much time will I need to be off work?
Recovery time is different for every individual, but generally speaking, MIS patients return to work, activities and regular routines much earlier than those who undergo traditional open surgery.
How does the use of a robot in surgery improve the outcome?
Remember that the surgeon is still performing the surgery. The robot simply makes it possible to operate with more precision. The surgeon’s skill, complemented by the robot’s precise movement, delivers superior results.
