What is Our Role in Your Health Care?
Megan Schlick, Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (ND), earned her doctorate degree from Bastyr University, an accredited four-year naturopathic medicine school in Seattle, Wash. NDs combine the science of modern medicine with traditional, natural therapies to give your body the best opportunity for health and healing. Instead of simply treating the symptoms of disease, holistic medicine looks at your health in the bigger picture, getting to the root of what’s causing illness and applying therapies to help the body heal itself.
Schlick treats most medical conditions for patients of all ages and stages of health. Although trained in the use of prescription drugs, Schlick only prescribes natural medicines, like vitamins, minerals and herbs, to aid in the healing process. However, because medicine is a collaborative effort, Schlick complements the care you are already receiving from your primary care provider or other specialists and will happily work with your health care providers to ensure the appropriate path to wellness.
Ultimately, holistic medicine is a different way of looking at how our bodies function. We work with you to determine what lifestyle, environmental or nutritional factors might be impacting your health and help you to create internal and external environments that will allow you to be your best self.
What to Expect at Your First Visit
The first visit consists of gathering information pertaining to your health history, including family history, social history, stress, diet, sleep habits and physical activity. It’s always a good idea to review your family’s health history prior to the appointment and bring a list of all current medications with dosages. Please plan for the first visit to last one hour and follow-up visits to last 30 minutes.
In additional to discussing your medical history, a physical exam and recommended lab work may be performed. Lab tests could include adrenal testing, food allergy panels, stool analysis, neurotransmitter levels and blood nutrient analysis.
Once a detailed history is complete and lab work reviewed, Schlick will customize a comprehensive treatment strategy. A treatment plan could consist of the following:
We believe in the importance of an integrative medical team. Our providers speak the language of conventional medicine and can involve your primary care physician on all aspects of treatment.
Each person’s health history is unique. At Shawnee Mission Holistic Care, Megan Schlick, ND, identifies which lifestyle factors are impacting your health – from a poor diet to too much stress – and teaches you the steps needed to help your body heal itself. She diagnoses and treats most medical conditions, including allergies, digestive disorders, cardiovascular conditions, autoimmune disease and infertility.
