Lymphedema Clinic

Serving The Kansas City Community

Lymphedema is swelling that most commonly occurs in the arms and the legs. However, it may occur in any part of the body. There are two types of lymphedema. Secondary lymphedema is most common and may occur after lymph node dissection, radiation, infection, trauma or prolonged venous stasis. Primary lymphedema is caused by congenital abnormalities in the lymphatic tissue and is relatively rare.

If you are experiencing swelling in your arms and/or legs as a result of vascular problems or surgery, we can help. Our team of lymphedema specialists includes experienced occupational therapists with specialized training and certification in the comprehensive management of lymphedema who can counsel you on therapies that may reduce potential complications such as pain, decreased mobility and non-healing wounds.

Our comprehensive lymphedema treatment programs include:

  • Education on skin care, lymphedema precautions and prevention of infection
  • Exercise prescription
  • Manual Lymph Drainage (a very light pressure massage technique)
  • Multi-layered, short stretch, compression bandaging
  • Measuring and fitting for compression garments.

The ultimate goal of our program is to ensure individuals are independent and confident in the long term management of their lymphedema. Although there is no cure for lymphedema, the treatment is very successful. Early diagnosis and treatment improves the prognosis considerably.
