Serving The Kansas City Community

Open any newspaper or women’s magazine, or turn on the radio or television, and chances are you will read or hear something about breast cancer. It’s not surprising, since breast cancer is the most common cancer among women. It is estimated that in 2003, more than 200,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed and more than 40,000 women will die from this disease. The incidence of breast cancer will continue to increase as our population ages.

A Complex Disease

Breast care at the Breast Center includes screening, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care, all provided by a multidisciplinary team of physician specialists, nurses, technologists, physical therapists and others. Patient care is enhanced when this broad range of services with multiple specialists is coordinated by a patient-focused system that concentrates on a patient’s entire continuum of care.

What is a Breast Center?

A Breast Center is a system for delivering coordinated, patient-focused care across the continuum of a woman’s breast health needs. Emotional Support

The emotional aspect of receiving a cancer diagnosis and subsequent treatment can be overwhelming. Most patients and family members can benefit from attending one of our breast cancer support groups, education and support from our nurse navigator or individualized supportive counseling.

Our newest Kansas City breast cancer support group is called Voices of Hope. This program provides an immediate and effective peer support system for individuals experiencing the isolation and uncertainty that can occur with a breast cancer diagnosis. Patients talk one-on-one with a trained survivor who can provide emotional support and practical information. Informed patients have less anxiety and more reason to hope, as well as a sense of control and confidence.
