Shawnee Mission Medical Center’s (SMMC) multidisciplinary teams of compassionate and skilled professionals provide expert diagnosis, treatment and care for patients and families in the Kansas City Metro who experience all types of cancer.
The SMMC staff works with the patient as well as involving and educating his/her family. SMMC encourages family members to come with the patient during treatments, to share a meal or to watch a comedy film. Support is an essential part of a healthy recovery.
Making you comfortable is very important. Our oncology staff is experienced and compassionate. Patients consistently rate their satisfaction with nurses in the oncology unit at more than 95 percent.
A family room is provided for the convenience of family and friends, complete with bathrooms and kitchenette. The facility has been used for birthday parties, Christmas celebrations and even for the wedding of one patient’s daughter.
Cancer can affect patients physically and emotionally. Therefore, we strive to provide the best care for the body and the soul. Breast cancer, bereavement and other support groups are available to patients and their families, along with a full staff of chaplains.
Patients hospitalized with cancer at SMMC are assisted by a team of professionals who collaborate to provide comprehensive, appropriate and timely care. Our Care Coordination Teams comprised of staff nurses, clinical nurse specialists, social workers, home health and utilization management nurses meet regularly on each nursing unit, strive to meet the needs of you and your family, and promote a smooth transition to post hospital care.
Making you comfortable is very important. Our multidisciplinary oncology team work together to assure that pain and other symptoms are identified and treated promptly. Physicians, nurses and pharmacists with additional expertise in pain and symptom management are available for consultation if needed.
