Working in coordination with SMMC's inpatient oncology department, patients receive the full continuum of care – from diagnosis, through inpatient and outpatient services and even prosthetics, support groups, classes and spiritual renewal – all on one campus.
The Cancer Center is led by medical oncologist Prasanth Reddy, MD, MPH, FACP, and radiation oncologist, Michael A. Hughes, MD. Dr. Reddy is Board-certified in Medical Oncology, Hematology and Internal Medicine, specializing in cancer care, blood disorders and breast care. Dr. Hughes completed his residency training at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, during which time he published original research in oncology. He utilizes IMRT and stereotactic radiotherapy for all types of cancer and specializes in breast cancer, sarcoma and prostate cancer. The two are joined by Samuel K. Caughron, MD, one of fewer than 300 physicians in the world with ABP Board-certification in Molecular Genetic Pathology and one of a very few who applies that training to clinical practice in a community setting. Becca Bell serves as the Cancer Center's program director. She brings more than fifteen years of progressive health care experience to the Shawnee Mission Cancer Center.
In addition to medical care and expertise, the Center also offers support for a variety of cancer patient needs including wigs, scarves and prosthetics, which are available through the Santé Image Renewal Boutique. Shawnee Mission Cancer Center patients, if they choose, have the opportunity to learn about the Seven Levels of Healing, and participate in survivorship, spiritual, wellness and fitness programs designed to treat the whole patient.
"Our commitment to innovation has never been more evident than in the recent growth of our oncology services," said Ken Bacon, Shawnee Mission Medical Center President and Chief Executive Officer. "With the addition of the Cancer Center and our stellar medical staff, patients are now able to receive the full continuum of care – from diagnosis, through inpatient and outpatient services – all at one location. We believe that convenience provides an enhanced experience for our oncology patients."
