National Breast Center Accreditation
The Breast Center at Shawnee Mission Medical Center (SMMC) recently received a full three-year accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers. It is the first Center in the Kansas City metropolitan area and the State of Kansas to receive this designation. Accreditation is only awarded to breast centers that are dedicated to providing the highest level of quality breast care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance.
“Being the first hospital in Kansas and the Kansas City area to have national accreditation shows our dedication to the patients we serve,” said Char Wallace, Breast Center Manager.
SMMC’s Breast Center demonstrates proficiency in Center leadership, clinical management, research, community outreach, professional education and quality improvement. It has maintained a loyal commitment to women throughout their battle against breast disease.
Services at the Breast Center include screening, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care, all provided by a multidisciplinary team of physician specialists, nurses, technologists, physical therapists and others. Patient care is enhanced when this broad range of services with multiple specialists is coordinated by a patient-focused system that concentrates on a patient’s entire continuum of care. The Breast Center also offers educational and emotional support services for those who are affected by the disease.
“This accreditation ensures our patients are receiving the highest level of care,” said Wallace. “They have access to comprehensive and innovative screening, diagnostic and treatment services. Our compassionate multidisciplinary team also includes nurse navigators to guide them through their care with individualized education and emotional support.”
Breast cancer affects more than 185,000 women each year, according to the American Cancer Society. About 41,000 of those affected will lose the fight against the disease. The Breast Center at SMMC cares for women at every stage, from screening and diagnosis to treatment and survivorship care.
