Maternal Fetal Specialists
Many obstetricians/gynecologists are qualified to manage complicated pregnancies, but in special cases and an expert consultant is needed. Perinatologists are complementary to obstetricians in providing consultations, co-management or direct care for complicated patients, both before and throughout pregnancy and delivery.
Perinatologists also work in tandem with family physicians and certified nurse midwives. This physician may act as an educational resource regarding the most current approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of many obstetrical concerns, as well as providing both inpatient and outpatient hands-on ultrasound examinations and other procedures.

Your Delivery Experience
The team of physicians, nurses and staff at the Birth Center work together to optimize the health, safety and comfort of every mother and baby during delivery. We work with each mother to personalize her birth experience, ranging from a low intervention natural approach to labor to high-risk deliveries requiring special monitoring.
At SMMC, you will be surrounded by the comforts of home. Our 26 birthing suites provide a spacious, warm and soothing environment. Extra touches such as pipeless Sanijet whirlpool tubs, cordless fetal monitors, flat panel TVs, on-demand movies and other amenities are available for your comfort. In our continued effort to provide the safest care available, we provide highly trained nurses, state of the art technology, and 24/7 in-house OB hospitalist and anesthesia providers.
The OB Hospitalist program enables a Board-certified obstetrician to be in-house at all times. This doctor doesn’t replace your own physician or midwife, but rather provides coverage in an emergency if your physician or midwife is not available. The OB Hospitalist program also enables women who prefer to have a vaginal birth after a previous Cesarean section (VBAC) this choice as an alternative to a repeat Cesarean section because an obstetrician is available at all times to assist the primary obstetrician or midwife.
Design Your Birth Plan
At SMMC, nurses are trained to care for you and your baby in the same room. Your nurse will help you learn how to care for yourself and your baby through the use of videos and personalized instruction. To ensure your comfort during your stay, a member of the health care team will visit you hourly. It's all part of preparing you for discharge and ensuring a safe transition to home.
Because we know newborns sometimes need a little extra help learning to breastfeed, the Shawnee Mission Birth Center has International Board Certified Lactation Consultants available to answer questions and help troubleshoot feeding difficulties before you return home. In addition, we offer a Breastfeeding Warm Line to answer questions that arise after you leave the hospital. Call 913-632-4330 and leave your name, phone number and question and a consultant will get back with you within 24 hours. Individual appointments in our Outpatient Breastfeeding Clinic may also be scheduled by calling the Breastfeeding Warm Line.
A Breastfeeding Support Group is also held every Tuesday from 10-11:30 a.m. in the Life Dynamics Building, 9120 W. 75th Street, Shawnee Mission, KS.
The Shawnee Mission Birth Center is proud to be a High 5 for Mom & Baby recognized hospital!
