Shawnee Mission Health (SMH) has long been a leader in caring for women, children and families. Today, our new Shawnee Mission Birth Center is a beautiful example of our commitment to providing you with state-of-the-art health care in a warm, soothing environment. And as the hospital that delivers the most babies in the metro, our commitment to women is clear.
More than 4,000 families choose SMH to deliver their babies each year, not because of our delivery rooms or amenities, but because of our outstanding doctors and dedicated nursing staff who deliver a safe, personalized birth experience for every new mom. Today, we’re pleased to have a beautiful facility – and a Level III NICU with private rooms for our tiniest patients – that meets the level of exceptional care our medical staff has always provided.
Our nurses and doctors work with you to plan a safe delivery experience – no matter your approach to childbirth. In addition, anesthesiologists are available 24 hours a day to meet your pain management requests. A Board-certified OB/Gyn is also here at all times to provide care as needed in emergency situations.
From our outstanding nursing and medical staff, to our childbirth education programs, the Shawnee Mission Birth Center takes every step to ensure you are comfortable, both physically and emotionally, during your stay with us.
Prenatal & Parent Education
A meeting with our Maternity Navigator approximately six weeks prior to your due date will help you feel at ease and prepared to bring your baby into the world. Your Maternity Navigator will:
- Assess your needs and expectations for delivery
- Familiarize you with what to expect during your hospital stay
- Complete hospital consent forms and paperwork prior to admission
- Find information and other resources that might be of assistance to your personal pregnancy situation
Everyone who visits with the Maternity Navigator will receive a copy of our book, Birth, Babies and Beyond. It is a comprehensive guide including what to expect at the hospital and caring for mom and baby after birth. At 30 weeks, call 913-632-4233 to schedule an appointment with our Maternity Navigator.
Maternal Fetal Specialists
Many obstetricians/gynecologists are qualified to manage complicated pregnancies, but in special cases and an expert consultant is needed. Perinatologists are complementary to obstetricians in providing consultations, co-management or direct care for complicated patients, both before and throughout pregnancy and delivery.
Perinatologists also work in tandem with family physicians and certified nurse midwives. This physician may act as an educational resource regarding the most current approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of many obstetrical concerns, as well as providing both inpatient and outpatient hands-on ultrasound examinations and other procedures.
Your Delivery Experience
The team of physicians, nurses and staff at the Birth Center work together to optimize the health, safety and comfort of every mother and baby during delivery. We work with each mother to personalize her birth experience, ranging from a low intervention natural approach to labor to high-risk deliveries requiring special monitoring.
Design Your Birth Plan
At SMMC, you will be surrounded by the comforts of home. Our 26 birthing suites provide a spacious, warm and soothing environment. Extra touches such as pipeless Sanijet whirlpool tubs, cordless fetal monitors, flat panel TVs, on-demand movies and other amenities are available for your comfort. In our continued effort to provide the safest care available, we provide highly trained nurses, state of the art technology, and 24/7 in-house OB hospitalist and anesthesia providers.
The OB Hospitalist program enables a Board-certified obstetrician to be in-house at all times. This doctor doesn’t replace your own physician or midwife, but rather provides coverage in an emergency if your physician or midwife is not available. The OB Hospitalist program also enables women who prefer to have a vaginal birth after a previous Cesarean section (VBAC) this choice as an alternative to a repeat Cesarean section because an obstetrician is available at all times to assist the primary obstetrician or midwife.
At SMMC, nurses are trained to care for you and your baby in the same room. Your nurse will help you learn how to care for yourself and your baby through the use of videos and personalized instruction. To ensure your comfort during your stay, a member of the health care team will visit you hourly. It's all part of preparing you for discharge and ensuring a safe transition to home.
Because we know newborns sometimes need a little extra help learning to breastfeed, the Shawnee Mission Birth Center has International Board Certified Lactation Consultants available to answer questions and help troubleshoot feeding difficulties before you return home. In addition, we offer a Breastfeeding Warm Line to answer questions that arise after you leave the hospital. Call 913-632-4330 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., seven days a week, and leave your name, phone number and question and a consultant will get back with you within 24 hours.
A Breastfeeding Support Group is also held every Tuesday from 10-11:30 a.m. in the Life Dynamics Building, 9120 W. 75th Street, Shawnee Mission, KS.
Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
Babies who require extra medical and nursing attention are cared for in our Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), where specially trained neonatal nurses, nurse practitioners and neonatologists from Children’s Mercy care for infants 28 or more weeks gestation.
Located on the fourth floor of the Shawnee Mission Birth Center, the NICU features 24 private rooms for mothers and their babies. Four rooms are specifically designed to accommodate twins.
A Family Retreat Area with a fireplace, kitchenette, private bath and lockers allow parents a quiet place to rest and rejuvenate their spirits.
