Shawnee Mission Medical Center (SMMC) offers a variety of mental health services to help adults and senior adults gain the skills, confidence and abilities they need to successfully manage their daily lives.

Full Range of Services

SMMC’s Mental Health Services address a variety of issues, ranging from prevention to treatment. These include depression, stress-related problems, life transitions, family problems, crisis, grief and loss, physical and sexual abuse issues, and anxiety/panic disorders. Depending on individual needs, clients may participate in any of these programs:

Inpatient Hospitalization

Offers a therapeutic atmosphere where patients receive acute care, 24 hours a day. The first step is an evaluation that includes identification of current problems and stresses. Following the assessment, our treatment team develops a plan of care tailored to each person’s needs. This team includes psychiatrists, discharge planners, therapists, expressive therapists, psychiatric nurses, pharmacists and behavioral health associates. The team offers individual, group, family and expressive therapies, as well as educational and exercise groups. Medication management is also provided by the client’s psychiatrist.

Intensive Outpatient Program

Offers treatment for several hours a day, which may include individual, family and group therapy. The individual's frequency of participation is based on individual needs and in collaboration with the multidisciplinary treatment team. Medication management is part of the treatment process. The program is available Monday through Friday, leaving the client free to continue interaction with family and friends in the evenings. Individuals may enter the Intensive Outpatient Program without previous treatment or it may be used as part of the continuum of care from the Inpatient Mental Health Program.

Follow Up

When it comes to aftercare, our staff works with a number of area resources. Our goal is to identify the most appropriate ongoing treatment and support following discharge.
