Generally, candidates are 100 pounds or more over ideal body weight, have a BMI of 35 with one or more weight-related health conditions, or have a BMI over 40. If your BMI is over 60, you will need to work with your doctor to lose weight to lower your BMI to a safer level so that surgery may be performed.

To calculate your BMI, divide your weight in kilograms by your weight in square meters. Although a patient's BMI does not actually correlate in terms of body fat or overall health condition, it is a means of categorizing weight in terms of nationally recognized standards.
