Insurance issues can be some of the most dreaded aspects of the bariatric surgery process. Not all insurance providers cover bariatric procedures and many carriers change their policies from year to year. Where do you begin? If you have questions about whether or not your insurance plan covers weight-loss surgery, contact your provider by calling the customer service number on the back of your card and ask if you have a policy exclusion for weight-loss surgery. If you're told you have an exclusion, see the options listed below. However, if you're told weight-loss surgery is not a covered benefit unless medically necessary, your doctor can help to prove medical necessity.
