Our Weight Loss Program

Shawnee Mission Medical Center's Bariatrics Program is a Level I Bariatric Center of Excellence, offering a full service bariatric program. We offer three bariatric surgeries as well as revisional surgery for select candidates. Our facility has an Intensive Care Unit, if needed, as well as a full compliment of medical specialties, including cardiac, pulmonary, physical therapy, psychology, nutrition and emergency medicine staff.

As a surgery candidate, you'll receive nutritional counseling with registered dietitians and a thorough psychological evaluation with a clinical psychologist who specializes in care of weight-loss surgery patients.

A registered nurse who specializes in bariatric surgery will see you before and after surgery to answer questions and provide support. A thorough physical examination is required before the surgery.  Cardiac, pulmonary and physical therapy evaluations may also be required before your surgery is scheduled.

The Shawnee Mission Medical Center Bariatrics Program is backed by a quality nursing staff and a state-of-the-art surgical facility to help make your hospital stay safe and comfortable.

To begin the journey through our Bariatric Program, each patient is required to attend a free informational seminar.  At the seminar you will receive information regarding weight-related co-morbidities, the risks and benefits of weight loss surgery, dietary modifications and patient testimonials.
