Shawnee Mission Medical Center (SMMC) offers a variety of mental health services to help adults and senior adults gain the skills, confidence and abilities they need to successfully manage their daily lives.
SMMC’s Mental Health Services address a variety of issues, ranging from prevention to treatment. These include depression, stress-related problems, life transitions, family problems, crisis, grief and loss, physical and sexual abuse issues, and anxiety/panic disorders. Depending on individual needs, clients may participate in any of these programs:
Offers a therapeutic atmosphere where patients receive acute care, 24 hours a day. The first step is an evaluation that includes identification of current problems and stresses. Following the assessment, our treatment team develops a plan of care tailored to each person’s needs. This team includes psychiatrists, discharge planners, therapists, expressive therapists, psychiatric nurses, pharmacists and behavioral health associates. The team offers individual, group, family and expressive therapies, as well as educational and exercise groups. Medication management is also provided by the client’s psychiatrist.
Offers treatment for several hours a day, which may include individual, family and group therapy. The individual's frequency of participation is based on individual needs and in collaboration with the multidisciplinary treatment team. Medication management is part of the treatment process. The program is available Monday through Friday, leaving the client free to continue interaction with family and friends in the evenings. Individuals may enter the Intensive Outpatient Program without previous treatment or it may be used as part of the continuum of care from the Inpatient Mental Health Program.
When it comes to aftercare, our staff works with a number of area resources. Our goal is to identify the most appropriate ongoing treatment and support following discharge.
SMMC’s Mental Health Services provides the support it takes to help people make changes that enable them to function successfully at home, at work and in the community.

Individuals who are experiencing difficulties or challenges in their lives, such as depression or substance abuse, may contact the Behavioral Health Assessment Center. If it is determined that an assessment is needed, an appointment is scheduled with a clinician.
The assessment process includes a comprehensive interview to assist in determining the appropriate type of treatment that will be the most beneficial to the patient. The recommendation will be shared with the individual and a disposition will occur. The individual may also request that the Assessment Center assist in facilitating communication with outpatient providers, employers and family members.
Appointments are available Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The assessments are for non-emergency situations.

Chemical dependency is a disease – a progressive, chronic disease that can be stopped, but recovery takes a commitment to life…for life.
Shawnee Mission Medical Center (SMMC) supports the recovery journey with a thorough evaluation, a comprehensive, multi-level treatment program and a skilled professional staff.
Our evaluation and treatment approach addresses each individual’s physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual needs, beginning with a multidisciplinary team assessment and continuing through our structured Continued Care program.
Our commitment to community spans three decades of helping patients and families achieve positive, lasting life changes. This commitment grows stronger with each success.
As part of the assessment process, SMMC’s Addiction Recovery Services match the severity of the illness with an appropriate level of care. This step helps assure appropriate placement, cost effectiveness and a positive outcome.
A comprehensive assessment of each individual’s physical and mental condition is completed by the Behavioral Health Assessment Center. We also work with families and referral sources to determine how best to address those needs.
Our intensive, therapeutic and educational programs focus on all aspects of addiction, including the attitude and behavior changes necessary for complete, successful treatment.
Because everyone has unique needs, our multidisciplinary team works closely with each individual and family, as well as referral sources, to create effective, individualized treatment plans.
Individual treatment plans may include group therapy sessions, individual counseling, spirituality groups, family therapy, educational lectures and orientation to 12-step programs – all designed to help individuals understand specific issues related to their addiction.
Because loved ones are crucial to effective treatment, our staff works with family and close friends to help them understand addictions and learn to initiate change in their lives.
Families and significant others participate in programs, support groups, multi-family groups and family therapy sessions. SMMC’s Addiction Recovery Services offer a full continuum of care to ensure the most appropriate level of treatment. Additional benefits to this approach include flexibility in treatment and cost-effective care.
Individuals advance through the various levels of care based on decisions by each individual and family in collaboration with the treatment team. As individuals advance to outpatient levels in the continuum, they continue to work with the same team members who originally developed the plan of care.
Patients who may need detoxification/medical management, a structured environment, 24-hour care and an intensive therapeutic and education program, benefit from Addiction Recovery inpatient care. We help create an atmosphere that encourages honest self-exploration and responsible behavior.
The inpatient treatment program may involve individual focus on personal treatment and recovery issues such as:
Our Intensive Outpatient Program provides an intense, structured treatment setting during evening hours, allowing adults and seniors to participate in activities at home, work and in the community during the day. Participants take part in individual and group therapy, multi-family groups, addiction education, relapse prevention and 12-step program orientation.
We are committed to helping individuals and families achieve positive, lasting life changes. We believe that participation in a 12-step program is vital to long-term success. Our Continued Care Program offers growth and support in recovery through:
We provide community education, focusing on wellness and prevention. We offer educational presentations and programs on addiction-related topics.
