Adventist Health System

Shawnee Mission Medical Center (SMMC) is part of a network of more than 500 health care facilities sponsored by the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The staff and physicians of SMMC meet exacting standards for professional excellence and work collaboratively to promote the Seventh-day Adventist healing ministry.

Adventist Health System (AHS), one of the largest not-for-profit, Protestant health care organizations in the nation, was founded in 1973. SMMC became an AHS affiliate in 2002. From large metropolitan centers to remote rural areas, AHS affiliates offer a broad continuum of health services that enrich the bodies, minds and spirits of individuals who live in the communities they serve.

As an AHS affiliate, SMMC is one of 39 hospitals, 24 nursing homes and 23 home health agencies that serve more than four million patients annually. AHS is part of a legacy that began promoting the benefits of good health more than a century ago when the Seventh-day Adventist Church opened its first health care facility in Battle Creek, Mich.

Through its Global Mission, the Adventist church is committed to communicating the message of the gospel throughout the world. The church’s Education Mission is rooted in the conviction that every individual should have the opportunity to study and grow.

Wholeness and the health of each individual’s body, mind and spirit are the focus of the Adventist’s Health Mission. The health ministry of the Adventist Church includes an extensive, worldwide network of quality, faith-based health care facilities.

Since its inception in 1860, the Adventist Church has promoted human freedom and responsibility throughout the world. Recognized as a growing church, Seventh-day Adventists are involved in a broad range of initiatives designed to improve the condition of all human beings. “Do unto others . . .” is a deep belief that permeates virtually every ministry undertaken by the church.
